The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, of Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group, is designed to interconnect communities from within.
RSVP engages persons 55 years and older in volunteer service to meet various critical needs; providing a meaningful experience that enriches the volunteer’s life as much as it benefits the community.
For over 35 years SOCAG’s RSVP program has worked to enhance the greater Southwest Oklahoma region, one volunteer at a time. Our mission is to improve people’s lives, strengthen community bonds, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.
We’re a proud part of AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP, the nation’s largest volunteer network for people aged 55 and over, with approximately 300,000 volunteers serving nationwide. Since its inception in 1971, RSVP has remained one of the largest, continuous volunteer efforts in the country. By tapping into the broad wealth of experience, skills, and talents of older Americans, and matching these assets with specific local needs, RSVP has tirelessly worked to bring about effective change within our communities.
This program is available to all, without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, poltical affiliation, marital or paternal status, genetic information, and military service.
Volunteers
Studies have amassed an unequivocal sum of data expounding the numerous benefits of volunteering, particularly for older Americans. Increased feelings of confidence, self-worth, and sense of purpose are just the tip of the iceberg. Volunteering imbues the giver with an intimate connection to their local community and provides the opportunity for impactful socializing. Research shows that volunteering is linked to lower blood pressure, less chronic pain, and reduced stress levels. It also helps ward off loneliness, which is directly connected to health complications including a heightened risk of Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Free supplemental insurance is available while serving with RSVP.
RSVP volunteer opportunities include: Delivering meals to homebound older adults, reading to children or assisting in Head Start classrooms, transporting adults to health care appointments and social events, greeting tax payers or preparing tax returns for low-income individuals, educating senior adults to prevent fraud and scams, helping at local food banks, and many other community service opportunities.
